Training of council of representatives of waste pickers of Pune

To share the work done under the Protoprint project, and train waste pickers to understand the technical aspects of the recycling process the project team conducted a formal training session for the council of representatives of waste pickers in Pune. 110 waste pickers from all parts of Pune were present for this training. Details about the Protoprint project, from its inception to the operations of the unit 1, were comprehensively explained to the waste pickers. At the Protoprint unit 1, Urali Devachi the plastic is converted into flakes and granules. The entire process from procurement of the raw materials to the final output was explained in a detailed manner so that each member understands the ins and outs of the recycling process. Placards of the recycling process happening at the unit 1 were shown and information brochures in the local language were distributed to all. Samples of the intermediate intermediate and final products from the recycling unit, photos of the recycling process helped the waste pickers to understand the process in a better manner. A video was made in the local language which talked about the process in action at the unit 1. This was shown to the waste pickers to enhance their understanding of the recycling processes.

Additionally, the linkage of waste pickers in the entire recycling chain, their current role and future role in the recycling pyramid was discussed, employment generating potential of recycling plastic and new avenues where waste pickers can contribute were elaborated.

At the end of the training the waste pickers understood the end-to-end method of plastic waste recycling. Following the training, the waste pickers were happy and proud to be associated with the Protoprint Project as they were now a part of the end-to-end management of waste in Pune.
