In a significant stride towards combating plastic waste and fostering sustainable practices, the PROTOPRINT project recently marked a pivotal moment with its on-ground kick-off and an engaging three-day in-person meeting. The meeting was held in Pune, India, from the 23rd  to the 25th of May 2023, and brought together all project partners. The meeting saw the participation of project partners, including adelphi from Germany, Social Seva Initiatives, SWaCH Pune, and project lead Kashtakari Panchayat. The central focus of the event was a comprehensive discussion and review of the project’s scope, objectives, and timeline. Partners delved into the nitty-gritty details of work package allocation and the expected deliverables within the designated project time frame.

During the meeting, each project partner presented updates on the current project status, shedding light on their respective contributions and progress. However, the event was not limited to boardroom discussions alone. The participants embarked on a field visit to gain first-hand insights into the tangible impact of the project’s efforts. The field visit specifically honed in on the operations of Swatch & Swatch+ as well as the activities of Kashtakari Panchayat. The focal point of this visit was to observe waste collection procedures carried out by waste pickers, activities at scrap shops, and the operations of the filament unit. This immersive experience allowed the partners to grasp the real-world implications of their collaborative endeavors. A key outcome of the meeting was the formulation of a detailed project outlook, projecting progress until May 2024. The roadmap included actionable plans, consortium engagement structures, expectations for reporting, and a comprehensive communication strategy. By aligning their efforts and resources, the partners aimed to ensure the seamless execution of the project’s vision.

The PROTOPRINT project is made possible through funding from the European Union, under the SWITCH Asia programme. Launched in September 2021, this four-year initiative is set to run until August 2025. At its core, the project seeks to revolutionize plastic waste management by establishing Self Help Group (SHG) owned recycling units. These units will be dedicated to transforming HDPE and PPE waste into valuable resources such as recycled 3D printing filaments and recycled plastic granules. The significance of this undertaking extends beyond environmental concerns. By empowering over 3500 stakeholders situated at the lower tiers of the waste value chain, including waste pickers and operators, the project contributes to enhanced financial stability and improved social conditions.

A significant stride has already been taken with the initiation of trial production of recycled 3D printing filaments and plastic granules. This early achievement underscores the project’s commitment to tangible results and its potential to catalyze meaningful change. As the PROTOPRINT project continues to unfold, its collaborative and holistic approach holds the promise of a greener, cleaner, and more empowered future for waste management. Through innovative strategies and global partnerships, the project stands as a beacon of hope in the fight against plastic waste.
